Any thoughts on the new field recorders? Any good or bad ones?
I'm considering the Tascam DR-07, but I'm not locked into it by any means.

I got a Zoom H2 for about the same $$ last year. Other than having a cheesy plastic feel to it,The unit is pretty solid w/t cool features. One notable feature is that you can record in 3 sonic fields 90,120 & 360 degree's . 360 is very useful recording the band in a rehearsal hall where the vocal bins are facing IN on the band. The drummer in that band had a Edriol R9 ?? (whatever model) it cost him $400 and could not pickup the vocal in a rehearsal hall.:332: My recordings where far superior to his...Mostly due to user know how, Opposed to his user ignorance .:da
We use a Zoom too and it sounds pretty accurate.
+1 on the Zoom H2.
Zoom H4 here. Easy to use and you get amazing recordings for what they are. I record Gigs and band practice with mine.
Check these out.

I went with the Tascam DR-07. Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I'll be playing with it when I get home.
I just got a DR-07 as well. Haven't really put it through its paces yet but that will start tonight at rehearsal...
How do you like yours 2 mos in, Kap'n?
+1 zoom h4
^_^
My dad has one, he is a professor of small room acoustics and used to be the chair of his department. Just saying that to say he knows sound equipment, and I tend to agree with him. Everyone has their own tastes and budget however. Downside of the h4 is that the user interface could be improved (IMHO), although once you figure it out it aint too bad.
The Sony PCM-D50 is a top of the line recorder. I have it and it records wonderfully, is well built and has extra features for slowing down recordings, etc. It is more expensive at $450, than others. It may be worth it though.
I don't doubt that for $450 the Sony PCM-D50 is great but I paid about one-third of that for my DR-07.
