I have 3 mini-toggles on my Schecter Strat, installed where a 3 or 5-way switch would be. They're the sole means of selecting p'ups.
They're on-off-on.
1st pos = full wind
2nd pos = off
3rd pos = tapped
You can mix any combo you like.
Using this setup is second nature to me.
If using the SD switches wasn't a hassle for you, you should adapt to mini-toggles easily.
Placing them by the toggle would seems make the most sense.

Sounds like a perfect job for a rotary switch. I'd get a three pole four way and add out-of-phase. Plus, chicken head knobs are tre cool.
Or on the other hand, I would consider using Les Paul style controls with push pulls. The idea of blending a neck humbucker with bridge P90 on a Tele is intriguing to say the least!
