Re: The Official TFF "what are you listening to?" thread
Listening to some Paul Collins's Beat. Great, great, great old stuff.
Such solid songwriting stripped down guitar-driven pop.
Every aspiring guitar player should cover Look but Don't Touch. Loaded with solid examples of power chords, mutes, dynamics, a blues-derived hook. Man, it's a clinic on how to play R&R at it's very core.
"The Beat" is a great album that spotlights a special time in power pop before over-production became the rule and not the exception.

Re: The Official TFF "what are you listening to?" thread
I picked up Dire Straits "Love Over Gold" and Golden Earring "Moontan" in the last week or so. Just dubbed them both onto a cassette to listen to in my car. Yeah, cassette player in the car still works even though the CD player is shot. I wore it out.

I've heard about those guys, just a flash in the pan. They'll never last as long as The Grateful Dead :D

Black Label Society: Grimmest Hits. Damn good songs with killer guitar. The song "The Only Word" scary Duane Allman type tone. Gave me chills.

Guys, I don't mean to spam here, but these guys (Crow) were really great. I can't stop listening to them.
Mosaic is also a great album!

Do you also like what Bob, Phil and the guys are doing with John Mayer (Dead and company)? They're constantly on tour now and I really like the way they are playing the Dead songs without derailing them too much, though Mayer sure ain't trying to be Jerry there.

I don't follow them and don't really have a positive or negative view of it. Mayer's a killer player and I have, IMO, his best cd when he did The John Mayer Trio with Steve Jordan on drums and Pino Pallidino on bass. Decades ago when the dead were doing different stuff I went and saw Bob Weir in Bobby and the Midnights. Just wasn't the same for me.

Watching baseball with the sound off and Corrosion of Comformity's Blind playing in the back ground.

Man, you DEFINITELY should check them out! IMHO Dead and Company is the closest we can ever get To seeing the original GD today

I need to dub that album to a cassette, the only time I get to listen to music is in the car and my CD player died. The tape deck still works, though.
No new stereo until Apple Play becomes available as aftermarket. I'm not buying a new car just for the stereo. Well, I would if I could but I can't.

A guitar player that isn't mentioned very often, which I find strange, considering he's been playing professionally since he was fifteen (lead guitar for the then unnamed Jefferson Starship), Craig Chaquico. This is from Once In A Blue Universe:

This is Craig Chaquico on Flowers of the Night, from Baron von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun, one of my top favorite guitar solos...

I can pretty confidently say while I probably have heard the tunes on that album I'm not familiar at all with it i.e. I can't hear a song from it and go "Oh, that's Rubber Soul."
by the time I began listening to the radio on my own, SPLHCB, MMT were already a couple years past being released so pretty much everything RS and earlier is still not well known to me.

We just finished watching the DVD from one of my favorite groups, Mingo Fishtrap's "Live at the Granada". I managed to catch their live show during the last tour that "Big Rog" was still with them.

For those not familiar with western culture, many tall buildings do not have floors listed as the thirteenth, nor have elevators with 13th floor buttons. This is due to the fear of the number 13 and superstitious beliefs.

Re: The Official TFF "what are you listening to?" thread
This album, by my mentor, Charlie Karp, has some outstanding tunes on it.

I love music above everything else in life, I spend most of my free time messing around with guitars or searching for music that I haven't heard before...

Today I’ve been listening to Procol Harum and Badfinger, two great and under appreciated bands.

Re: The Official TFF "what are you listening to?" thread
I’ve been enjoying Madeleine Peyroux‘s “Careless Love” album and always think she has a very Billie Holiday vibe about her. Back in 2006 my wife and I were having dinner in a St Johns Newfoundland restaurant and surprised our waitress when I recognized they were playing that album. She said we were the first people who ever knew who that was. It was funny at that time.

Re: The Official TFF "what are you listening to?" thread
No. They were a band on their own whom McCartney signed to Apple. They did have a big hit with the McCartney-penned “Cone and Get It”. I believe both McCartney and Harrison produced them here and there, but they were a band before Apple.

Re: The Official TFF "what are you listening to?" thread
I just listened to Rubber Soul (2009 remastered version) on my vintage Pioneer stereo through the Advent speakers. "Wow" hardly does it justice. I even picked up my strat and played along, ordered the song book for it (and Abbey Road.)

Re: The Official TFF "what are you listening to?" thread
I can't imagine hearing that for the first time in 1965. Too early for me, I was 7 years old and not in charge of my music selection. I was lucky to see the Beatles debut on the Ed Sullivan show because it was school vacation week and for some strange reason we never got to watch that show again. So I didn't get to see The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Doors et al. Mostly because it was on Sunday nights after my bedtime and probably in reruns during the summer months but it also could have been my parents trying to prevent us from seeing any more of that heathen rock'n'roll music :biglaugh:

Re: The Official TFF "what are you listening to?" thread
I was a Beatles fan from the moment I first heard them. I was ten-eleven years old, living in Thailand. Elvis was the hot commodity, even there. Then along comes "She Loves You, Yeah, yeah, yeah," and I was hooked. "I Saw Her Standing There," "It Won't Be Long," "All My Loving," "Please Please Me," all had me singing and Beatlemania was under way.
I never saw them in concert, but I did see them. They were touring Asia and had a brief layover in Bangkok. A bunch of school kids went to the airport, and John, Paul and George made an appearance at the airplane doorway (hatch?). Don't know what happened to Ringo.
