Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
I don't know about the American factory. I was told I could not get the same kind of tour that year at the American Factory because Associated Press was supposed to have a photo thing up on that one. I never did find the AP photo spread, and my editor had a falling out with Fender so I never pursued it..

Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
cool
so give us the juice on this falling out
-
Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
I wish I could... but the story is not really that interesting..
Fender, like all big companies does not really put a lot of energy into helping the little guy out..
Thats about the most I can say on that.

I thought this thread would help me decide on a purchase!!! Now I all screwed up. Everything sounds good!!!

Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
What was this thread about again?
No, but seriously, if I had the cash, I did not already own a Strat, and I was going to buy a new one, I'd be getting a 50's classic in surf green, or a 60's classic in Lake Placid Blue.

Just a teaser. My lake Placid Blue 60s MIM alongside my son's Squire.

Can't tell if your dissing the colour or not, anyhow.
Its a slightly darker hue in the flesh. The flash always distorts the colours and the 'aged' parts turn white. If I switch the flash off it's difficult not to get blurred images.
The colour wouldn't have been my first choice but I've grown to like it.

Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
^ that blue looks like a light navy blue
from what I've seen in person it looks more bright crystal(?) blue or something..

Yikes !!!!!
Was my last post censored ??
-
Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
Um I wasn't dissing the color I was just saying I've never seen an accurate representation of the color that I've seen in person, on a picture. I really like the color myself.

Mmmm. A rebuke would have been nice though, no point in censorship unless you know why. T'was meant to be humourous - not sexist (my presumption at why it was pulled). I've seen a lot worse on the LP forum.

Yo, no worries mate. I've got some photos that I took of the North East Coast of England - they ended looking like the tropics and no-one at work identified them as being local. I just can't capture the true colour, will try again at the weekend

Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
Boy, I'm glad I did not see that post.. My wife would have slapped me... yes, she would have found out somehow.. Don't ask me how... she would just know. :D
Lake placid blue with rosewood, mint green pickguard, and aged plastic looks just fabulous. Well, to me it does...

Ooops. Should have read the rules. No offence was meant. Just a bit of humour. I consider myself rebuked

No worries. No offense taken. It was a lovely shot actually (), but we think the rules in place help keep this a nice discussion forum, and not a 7th grade boys locker room. :D

Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
I'm getting a 2nd hand MIA strat for a good deal. After reading this post i feel like getting another strat, but a MIM one. Are the current MIM ones good. Is that what everyone is talking about? Say i were to make modifications. Which MIM would be best for value. After changing pups and hardware? Which are the "main " MIM strats out for sale? E.g. standard, classic? are there any others i should looka round for. If i buy from Musicians friend, would that be advisable?

Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
Was just browsing the Fender Site. I would kill for a Surf Green Strat. The 50s classic comes in a surf green. But i've always wanted it with a rosewood neck. You think its worth it. Getting the '50s and buying a neck either MIM/MIA. and also changing the hardware, or whatever needs to be replaced?
-
Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
ya I love that surf green
to those who have seen it in person
is it a bland/pale kinda green or is it kinda bright, glow in the dark maybe even a neon glow ?
-
Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
I think its quite neon-esque. All the professional photos makes it look like a pastel green however all the home shots seem to be quite a saturated surf green.
But yes, hows the idea of 50s Classic MIM strat, changing the neck and hardware. is it worth the trouble.

Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
but if the 60s classic strats and the jimmy vaughn signature have the same electronics, why does fender say in the jv signature site " US MADE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS" ???
somebody said theyre the same, but that doesnt seem to be right...

Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
surf green is a kind of pale green,at least on my 2004 MIM strat.it looks good with a pearl pickguard.BTW ive got a 2004 oly white MIM strat,a deluxe MIM players strat in natural, and an early MIJ strat in photoflame,im not ever sure which is my #1,it seems to vary from week to week.im also GASing for one of the new aerodynes in blue...hey,someones got to keep the fender factory humming

Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
I love my Mex Strat! hate the pickups though, they sound tinny. I'm gonna replace the pickups with either a seymour duncan high-output pickup & 2 kinman single coils, or get a new pickguard with the s/s/s config and go with 3 kinman single coils.
Also the mexicans have 21 frets while usa & most MIJ strats have 22 frets.
other than the pickups, I think its a great guitar. The hardware is spot on. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere the mex strats have USA parts, its just assembled in mexico.

Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
I love my MIM Standard Strat:appl:. For several years I've told people that Les Pauls were the ONLY guitars I could play reasonably well and made many excuses for not buying a Strat:wah:. Then one day last year I began thinking that I needed a Strat or Strat clone to "round out" my playing but none of the Strats I played in our local music store turned me on very much:speechles. I always ignored the MIM Strats and played the "higher end" stuff.
One day in early March, of this year, I went back into our local music store with cash (actually credit card) in hand and an IBANEZ AR-300 I wanted to get rid of. I played on a bunch of Strats again, and ignored the MIN Standards:eyes. There was an "04" Sage green (maple fretboard) Strat on a hanger that I kept looking at, but kept passing up. Well... after a couple of hours of going back and forth with several more expensive Strats, I was on my way out the door (empty handed - Strat wise) when I decided to give the sage green MIM Standard a shot. It was being sold as used, but it was in perfect condition with all of the original stickers and that hard to get off protective plastic crap they stick on the pickguard. The price tag was $249.99. I pulled it down and played it unplugged first. It seemed really alive and had some nice sustain. When I plugged it in I was totally blown away by how good it sounded. I took it up to the counter and told the sales person: "Here, I wanna buy this, and I'll need a case for it too". I walked out with the guitar and case for $318.99! I still had the IBANEZ though, and a couple weeks later I traded that in toward the purchase of my G & L Comanche (but that's another story for another time).
When I got it home I plugged it into my TRAYNOR amp first, then into the FENDER. It sounded great in both amps! I took the guitar back to the store to have it checked out by their tech, and have the bridge P'up wired to the tone pot. There was a minor issue with the tremolo so he kept it a few days. In the meantime I bought a new "05" MIM Standard Strat (rosewood fretboard - bigger frets, bigger trem block). It sounded great also, but I liked the sound of the "04" better (although I liked the feel of the "05" neck & fretboard better). After I got the "04" back, I thought about switching necks, but before I could do that I received an e-mail from an old friend of mine. He said he wanted to know if I wanted to sell off one of my Strats, so I sold him the "05".
Three weeks ago I bought an authentic "06" FENDER MIM Standard Strat neck off e-bay. After shimming the neck and getting it set up, this has turned into one awesome little guitar:bluesbros!!! The only other mod I'm considering is installing a Graphtech string tree.
I have guitars that are better, and more expensive (I'm getting the top refinished on my Les Paul R9 from washed cherry to darkburst), but lately, this has been my "go to" guitar when I just want to pick a guitar and play along with some backing tracks!

Re: U.S. vs. Mexican Strat
I bought my 2006 mexican strat for one reason alone; it was simply the best guitar i played in the store, and looked freakin awesome (it was electron blue w/rosewood fb).
The action was really low and it felt like it was playing itself. The neck was smooth and the overall feel of the guitar was great. Just as good as the MIA's. No difference. At all.. I didnt care much for the sound though, it seemed tinny.. But it would resonate forever. I figured some new pups would be in order if i bought it.
I bought it, then upgraded it with 2 lace golds and a gibson 57 nickel humbucker. The result is the best playing, sounding, looking strat i could imagine, and overall it was still $300 less than an american standard.

But then I found there are (at least) two versions of this guitar: the American-made and the Mexican-made. And the prices are quite different!
So my question for those of you who have more experience with Fenders is:
What are the most important differences, if any, (especially regarding the quality issues) between the American and the Mexican made Stratocasters?
Thanks in advance for replies - I'll take the decision relying on your advices.
I think you should just go play as many MIM and MIA strats as you can find, then buy the one single one that SPEAKS TO YOU...:band
Personally, I like the American ones better...
