How would the wiring be different on the '52RI for a Roy Buchanan model? I've always heard that his '53 was stock. I've also heard that the '52RI was initially introduced as a nod to R.B., without going so far as to call it a signature model.

If you watch the Buchanan PBS Special, when he's playing solo in his parents front yard, he's using the middle position. It had been switched to the modern wiring...

Thanks. Much to my dismay, I've never seen the legendary PBS Special. Is that the one from 1971: is it available from the PBS store, or anywhere else that you might know of?
(I've got Original Vintage pups and a 4-way switch in my '52 RI; so I guess I've got it covered as well as can be with a new ('01) guitar.)

Thanks Neo. That one is my fave to play. On the Telemodders site, there are a few recreations of the names above, Keith, Andy, Don and my Jeff...a few more are in the works and the next one is really gonna be nuts. This one will have a small production run, where the others were one-of's because no one was really making them and doing mods is something we all like to do. It was nice to see the Jimmy Bryant Tele come to life. There sure seems to be a lot more signature Strats, so unless we do it ourselves, the wait is gonna be while...at least for Tele's. I remember that one guy who did the insane copy of Roy's Tele...

It's been fairly well documented that Roy's 53 had stock wiring. Seymour Duncan, among others, attested to this. When I listen to those old Polydor albums, I cannot hear a two-pickup in parallel sound -- what I hear is the neck pickup. When I listen to the Alligator albums, after the 53 had been retired, on the Telecaster tracks, I hear the two-pickup in parallel sound all over the place.

I'm not second guessing anyones eyes or ears here, but I'm sure that almost everyone who is familiar with the old Telecaster wiring knows that the 2 pups in parallel could be attained by setting the switch between the notches of the bridge and neck pups: that's what I did, easily finding and not having any problems losing the connection, before having the 4-way switch installed. I'd be suprised to find out that Roy wasn't aware of this option, and that he didn't make use of this sound once in awhile, which might be difficult to discern, considering his penchant for manipulating his tone with liberal knob use.

The Schematic for the 53 Tele on SD's site was drawn from the way Roys stock 53 Tele was wired up.
Fezz -- I did not mean to cast doubts on your veracity or your powers of observation. I was trying to say that these old ears don't hear the parallel sounds on those Polydor albums. Of course, I wouldn't back up my ears with hard cash. I've always loved all the Tele tones on those Polydor albums, and, frankly, I never cared for the the sound of single coils in parallel, so I simply concluded that the parallel sounds aren't there. (I never use that position on my Teles, and my Strat has a three-way switch, just so I won't get those sounds.)
The times I saw Roy with his 53, he spent most of his time in the bridge position, and the rest of the time in the middle position. Since what I thought I was hearing was a neck only sound, I came to the conclusion that his guitar had stock wiring. But, as I said, my ears can be fooled.
Didn't take it that way at all, Jim. Your post are always informative and spot on. On that PBS special it was jusy Roy and his guitar playing. I coulda sworn it was the in-betweenie sound, but so much of the magic came from his hands, it very well could have been the neck p'up only.

He was playing a Tele in that Scorsese Blues Series on PBS, with Van Morrison and Tom Jones. Don't think it was THAT one, but he sounded killer.

Great pic Marcondo...that Tele's neck has some major flame. I did'nt know that arm contour was sanded...always took it for perfect wear. I could have sworn I heard he gave that Tele to Seymour.

i'm with the stetksman on this. i want my own chuckocaster fender custom shop geetar. i'm working on the prototype right now. but i wish i could just buy the damn thing and not have to build it. but then again, fender is never going to build my dream guitar. so it's DIY for me.

I'd like to see a Prince Tele. I know he plays a knockoff usually (Hamer?) but he gets a nice Tele-like tone and the guitar looks so good. Just my .02.
