Offered New Job, and warning, I am a total geek.

A former employee of mine offered up my name to a local university, and they called me asking to talk to me. I went to see them today, and they are looking for people to work on cosmology research. I talked with them about the current rave in string theory - adding a dimension and looking at membrane theory from a gravitational point of view, and seeing if it could be reconciled with Einstein's General Theory.

But I really love my job at the RV dealership. I'm in a complete state of confusion as to what to do. I love my job, but I feel somewhat that I'm pissing away an education. But I also realize that this research is so deep that it really doesn't have any real life application other than making the university look better in the journals. I can't see it making any airplanes fly higher, farther, or faster. It would be a cake job, as long as I keep a bunch of equations on the whiteboard I can pretty much do whatever I please, whenever.

So which is more important, having fun or being a player in the ego inflated world of research. I'm still liking the fun option better.

Yeah, but can you borrow the dean's power boat or RV when you want to play with toys...?

Furthering of knowlege is a great thing.

I used to work in universities. I probably still would if I thought I was furthering knowlege in some way. Eventually it dawned on me that my specialty enriched everybody else in the chain two to ten times more than myself, and I had the shittiest job. I got out.

As long as the bills get paid and you'll have enough money to live out the rest of your life (retirement, etc...) go with the FUN option. Life is too short to waste your precious time on jobs that frustrate the HELL out of you.

Well I think I was one of the guys steering you away from the RV sales job, but I've leaned peace of mind is most important. If part of your peace of mind requires your thinking abilities, which has to be taken into consideration.

That factor is not as important to me as it once was. If in two months, when the university I work for lays me off, If I end up being a security guard, and we can make ends meet.. So be it...

LOL, that sounds like the beginning of a Chevy Chase movie. Mmmm, okay think of what you will need to have in twenty years, and then see what job will furnish that. then decide. cause 20 years flys by. Is this for reals.?

    OA,
If you take the new research thing, make sure they give you a huge motorhome to run the band around in!!.

drewbaby, I sell the big boys. Luxury Diesels and a few high end gas. I also sell Ranger boats. Let's just say the perks don't suck. I get a Ranger and can borrow any motorhome if I do my job and ask nice. My 15 year old nephew asked me to drive him around on his date. So I took a 40 footer with an atruim and 3 slides. Man, was his girlfriend's father pissed! You think showing up in a van is bad... Ended up having to take the whole family to dinner.

My education is actually in aerospace, where I worked on supersonic combustion chambers. The dreaded SCRAM jet. But since I have a pretty sound background in thermodynamics, and have solved a few math problems for some people there, they figure I'd make a good cosmologist. I think the stuff is pretty goofy. Looks to me like they've reached the point of specious mathmatics - les jsut kee makig changes in the basic assumptions until the math fits. The problem with string theory is that it has yeilded 5 unique solutions. It also only explains what happens instantaneously after the Big Bang. If you add a dimension, you have a membrane instead of a string, and it can explain what happens before the Big Bang. But, it also implies time is infinite and that there can be an infinite number of universes. I don't find that solution too appealing.

Man, I thought comologists fixed peoples hair! Visions of OA and a bevy of purple haired beauties in his chair all giggling like school girls.

Damn, OA, does this mean we've got a bona fide, certified, genius in the band? Remind me to take you along next time I go car shopping. You can pose as my uncle.

Stay with the boat sales, set up a side business, offshore dba cosmo specialist, and charge the Big Bang Theory folks a consulting fee each time they contact you. You get to play in both worlds and profit from it!
