I am seriously considering the Elitist Casino (made in Japan in the same factory that does the professional Gretsch models these days) for my next guitar. It's probably either that or a Gibson SG Standard.

The Elitist Casino reportedly has far better craftsmanship than the standard Korean-made model, and the pickups are actual Gibson P-90s.

My thoughts exactly when I saw a custom run of '54 ri goldtops with one P90 at the bridge. If I had to have just one it would be at the neck!

Smooth rolled back clean jazzy tones and to-die-for honkin-wood-splintering cranked sounds from the neck.

Reading through this thread really makes me want to try a P90 (or something in that vein) in my Squier Tele (the one in my avatar). GFS makes one that's humbucking size. Anyone ever try one of these?

PC, nice playing...and great tone. I've been looking for a tele and wanted to put a humbucker in the bridge, but think a P90 would work better after listening to your recording. I'm sold!

Anyone who has been reading this thread but missed the threads in The Whammy Bar:

This weekend, Guitar Center stores are having a Three-Day Sale, and all of them seem to be offering the imported PRS SE Soapbar II guitars for $289 or $299, depending on locale. This set-neck, two P-90-style mahogany-bodied guitar gets totally into Les Paul Junior territory, and comes with a nice gig bag. If you're gassing for P-90s, I don't think you can find a nicer example for a lower price.

    Re: P90's Edumacate me!

I compared the Prs to my Les paul special dc faded. THe pickups sounds muddy next to mine. But they do sound like P-90's For #300 it is a wonder the guitar stays glued together, but they sure look nice. The neck has a funny feel somewhere beteen Gibson and Fender;that was my bigest objection.

Now who wants to by my LesPaul DC? With Bongolation style P-90's for the ultimate grind!

    Re: P90's Edumacate me!

Dang....$289! Stinkin' cheap. I wonder how they sound...there aren't any GC's near where I live.

Teleman1, the neck issue would make since...I believe the scale length of a PRS is in between that of a Strat and Gibson. The PRS is a true blend between the two classics...but saying that I would also say they lean more to the Gibson side of tone.

Anyway...we were talking about p-90's? What's the difference between a P-90 and a humbucker when it comes to the clean side of things?

Well, naturally I'll answer with another clip. Here's that same Tele with clean. Awesome Jazz tone IMO.

Has anybody tried mounting a P90 into a box-bridge? It might be difficult, but the results could be very interesting.

I have an itch to buy a Squier '51, and put a tele-style humbucker sized bridgeplate on it and try one of the Fralin Twangmasters. Although it might be silly to put a $130 pickup in a $150 guitar...

It should be reversable, and I'm sure you can find a home for both the pickup and the guitar, even if they don't stay mated to each other.

I've been thinking about picking one of those up and throwing a GFS Liverpool into the bridge slot. They're fun little guitars.

Seriously, though... either in this thread or another recent thread, someone mentioned that the body depth on the '51s has been giving modders some fits. There's not always enough wood in there to let you install the pickups you want... or at least that what I read. Having not measured it myself, I don't know fer real...

    Re: P90's Edumacate me!

If the p'ups are mounted to the guard or the bridge plate it doesn't seem like it would be a problem.

Brad- I think it's InstituteOfNoise who has one in his 51... + a Bigsby.

    Thanks 95.

That was a '93 Fender Blues Dlx amp and a Seymour Duncan P-90 in the neck of that same ash Tele. Boss DD-3 for slap echo IIRC. Same settings on rhythm and lead track.

    Re: P90's Edumacate me!

Thanks Neo. I'll have to look around and see if I can find pics of that.

Right now I can't decide if I want to drop one of those pickups in a '51 or drop two into a Strat pickguard that I can slip into and out of a couple of partsocasters.

So many options... I guess my best bet would be to end this thread hijacking and return the talk to P-90s.

Ahhh, I have a Bl Dlx as well. Now I know what a P90 would sound like through that puppy, or at least close to it. Thanks for sharing pc.

I've been reading this thread for to long...I jonesing for tele with a neck P90, but don't know what would blend well with it at the bridge.

I tried to find one those Squire Custom II at the local music store to fool around with. There so cheap it's tempting...I'll try to hold out for a real tele though. Come on Christmas money!

After playing my new guitar for a few days, I can tell you... another P-90.

A soapbar at the bridge position is the source of that roaring rock rhythm tone á la Leslie West. Think of the rhythm sound on "Rocky Mountain Way." Ooooooh, baby. Yummy. So far the bridge alone and the two pickups together are my favorite things about the guitar.

I was out looking at those Squiers myself, 95. I might have bought one if the PRS hadn't been such a steal.

Oh yeah...it was you that mentioned that GJ. That sounded like at great deal. So you are happy with the PRS? Sounds like you are having fun experimenting.

    Re: P90's Edumacate me!

Yeah, I'm really happy with it. Even with the questionable nut, it still plays really well, and the compensated wrap bridge intonates very nicely. The neck is great, the fret work very high quality, nice finish and tuners, and the pickups really lay down the smack. I would have been real happy with the guitar if I had paid $450 for it: at $300, I'm out of my skull.

If I had found a good example of the Squier Tele Custom II, that would have been a good choice, too, I think. The ones I played left me kind of cold, but I know lots of guy here and elsewhere like 'em a lot, so I guess I just didn't find a good one.

The sound of a P-90 near the bridge can be a great, rude, clangy, overdriven joy.

    Re: P90's Edumacate me!

Yeah, I've read elsewhere that the Custom II does not come set up well. Most of them need some fret work, neck adjustment, and saddle adjustments. However, it seems everyone raves over the tone you can get out of a $220 guitar.

They are probably worth the money if you can do all the work yourself. I think the PRS was the way to go though...sounds like the quality is far superior to that of the Squire. Enjoy!

    Re: P90's Edumacate me!

Now having spent some time with my PRS, and really knocked it around, used it on a couple of productions (including a version of 'Takin' Care of Business' for a major insurance company's in-house audio newsletter, and yes, we're getting the rights... Fezz, I've got a synch request form in front of your buddies in Nashville), and hearing it extensively both plugged in and unplugged, I've got to agree with some things Don said about guitars like this in an older thread...

A huge part of that Leslie West tone and of the general fun and rudeness of a Les Paul Junior/Melody Maker/what-have-you is the wrap tailpiece. A guitar with a stopbar and TOM just doesn't clang like this. I think Gibson made a real mistake changing the bridge setup on the current M.M.'s, and I'm more convinced than ever that the SE Soapbar II is a killer P-90 buy.

In this other thread, I remember telling Don that I didn't like wrap bridges and really wanted a TOM because I was concerned about intonation problems, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Small light mahogany body + set neck + wrap tailpiece + P-90s = da bomb.
