Are they using a fuzz box?

The Old 97's did a song called "Jagged" which has this really neat buzz saw like electric guitar playing over the acoustic guitar. Is the guitarist using tele through a fuzz box?

If so, please recomend a good cheap fuzz with very little 60 cycle hum? I'm thinking around $30.

However, should i decide to get a b.y.o.c.

Don't know the song, but a Fuzz Face is the Hendrix pedal. Fairly raspy, but it cleans up really well with just a slight roll down of the volume.

A Tonebender MKII is the early Led Zep/Beck/T. Rex pedal. One sound, but it's a nice one, if you like it. It didn't work for me.

Probably not. However, you could probably link to one of the short clips on Amazon or one of the other on-line music purveyors.

One of the more raspy ones out there is the Jordan Bosstone.

FYI, a BYOC will run more than $30.00.

The MKII can have 1 of the transistors lifted via a switch/button, basically offering a FuzzFace. Some of the caps have different values. Overall from what I understand, lifting that 1st transistor will offer the ability to roll back the vol ands clean up some.

I'm certainly no pedal expert, but sound has a similar quality to Gary Louris' sound on the Jayhawks' "Hollywood Town Hall" album.
Raspy and lot of nice texture to it.
If the photos in the CD booklet are to be believed, he used a Fuzz Face, '67 SG and a BF Deluxe. He play Teles and other things too.

If you're looking for a woolier sound, you might try the Big Muff Pi. Or, get a BYOC Big Muff. It'll be fun to build, will cost less than the NYC Big Muff Reissue, and is liable to sound better.

Thanks for introducing me to the jayhawks and thanks for trying to help me out with my quest of hunting down this sound. I emailed the band but of course they did not answer. I am totally addicted to this sound, and i want something similar in my arsenal.

But since the MKII does double duty...
it's really the MKII Vs. the BYOC Muff

What I really need is i guess is comparison clips, or better yet a fuzz with a mod to switch between all three fuzz circuits.

Well the MKII can switch between 2 as I understand. There are some clips on the BYOC page. In addition, you can read through their forum as well.

FWIW- Louris' sound on that record really evokes Neil Young for me. So there's a similarity to a Tweed Deluxe set on detonate.
Not the same but it evokes Neil.

Since you're on kind of a budget, you can get yourself in the ballpark, then let yourself do a little evoking.
That's half the fun, the free half.

Just went to the Jayhawks site on myspace & listened. I don't know how I've missed out on hearing these guys for so long. They ruuuule! I love that Americana sound!

The closeset thing to a fuzz pedal I've had was probably an MXR Distortion+.
That was years ago.

The last band I was in I used a BK Butler Tube Driver for my dirty sounds. Into a smallish red-knob Fender SS combo.
It worked for what I was doing. But it wasn't much like the nice toothy sound on "Jagged."


I do really like Gary Louris's sound though. That's why it jumped to mind after just hearing that little bit of the Old 97's.
Another sound is Beck on "Over Under Sideways Down." A Tonebender, I guess.

I don't know anything about the Jayhawks. However, I do have HTH, and we cover Waiting for the Sun.

That album sounds as Buffalo Springfield as anything I've heard.

As I understand it, early B.S. is Vox Tone Bender (similar to Fuzz Face), but Gretsch rather than Gibson. and BF and tweed amps.

Then maybe the byoc MII is what i'm after. I listen to a few muffs on you tube and they all sounded to muddy with to much gain for what I'm thinking of.
