I dunno. But from what I've seen, the CS is much thinner. Usually. I've seem some relics that are paper thin. The US "nitro" stuff seems thicker when looking in the cavities and neck pocket.
I don't know the exact mil thickness specs but I do know that I have a Martin HD-28 and 2 Les Paul's and the coat of nitro on my 62 RI thin skin strat is paper thin in comparison to my above mentioned nitro finish guitars; and I do mean much thinner. As I began to look at it more closely I remember thinking to myself that this guitar is going to age quickly compared to my others. I don't own any custom shop strats or teles for that matter, so I can't comment on them, but I have owned many guitars over the past 44 years of playing, and not one comes close to being as thin a coat of nitro as the TS's. I know these don't have any urethane base coat, and maybe that makes the difference as well.

My 60' Relic has a super thin nitro finish, and certainly no poly underneath.
So how many coats? 2 maybe 3? I'm trying to replicate on a warmoth neck.
I'd like it thick enough to protect the neck, but thin enough that it ages fast.
