Classic Vibe Tele w/ Amp Shootout

I've been diggin' this clip the last couple of days:

*EDIT* The demo performed by guitar teacher Sam Swank:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVGWICF5-i8

A stock Classic Vibe Tele through three different Champion 600 amps; one's a stock RI, one's a RI with the Mercury Magnetics upgrade (and a bad ground loop inside), and and ORIGINAL Champion 600!

    Classic Vibe Tele... $300

    Champion 600 amp... $200

    Lack of pretentious gear snobbery...PRICELESS!

Of course...I'm still trying to decide WHERE to order my CV Tele, as there are a lot of stories of stores claiming 'IN STOCK AND READY TO SHIP' when in actuality it's not.

    Any advice on that front?

I actually prefer the sound of the stock MIC 600 in the demo, the vintage 600 too.
I'm not crazy about the "ZZ" levels of gain he's getting on the MM mod amp.

Funny, I thought the breakup of the stock MIC 600's I tried in stores were over the top.

Thanks for the clips! It's amazing how much better that early-1950s Champ sounds than even the modified new one. The Classic Vibe sure sounds like a real Tele through each of 'em, though.

As for recommendations; if you're ordering online, I'd go with Zzounds.com. Their site says whether an item is in stock and when it'll ship, and I've never known them to lie about in-stock status. Plus they'll match the best price you can find online.

If you end up having to order from a less reliable place like Sam Ash or Musician's Friend, I'd do it by phone, where you can ask an actual human being if the guitar's really in stock and when it'll ship.

Shoulda told us what speakers were in them. I too like the old one best - but that's probably the speaker. The guitar was very impressive.

I was thinking along the same lines about calling these people. Thing is, I want to use PayPal, too, since this is where my money is now. ;) But then, I just checked and zZounds does not have it listed anywhere.

The amps all sound good, IMO, just different. I'm annoyed with that MM upgrade amp, because it has a better quality of sound, but whoever did that upgrade created a pretty bad ground loop.

What's promising, is that my next personal build is a 5F2A, and I'm encouraged to hear this Tele through a low-watt SE Tweed amp.

If yer gonna do a 5F2A there is no reason not to do a GA-8. you basically just punch an extra octal/pwr tube socket in the tweed princeton chassis, etc. THEN you have a killer amp, as opposed to just a very good one... ;-)

Is that the parallel-single-ended deal you posted about here not too long ago? If you have a schematic and layout, I'm all eyes! Honestly, I had been toying with that idea for awhile now and am just not sure yet. I have the 5F2A cab, so grabbing that chassis is easy enough, and there's more than enough room for the extra power tube, as you mention.

I'm still concentrating on this Tele at the moment

yeah, you can find schems on-line. just make sure it's the 2x6V6 Gibsonette style dual SE GA-8 Discoverer and not the GA-8T Discoverer style push-pull......

The old one sounded great! The new one with the MM tranny had way more gain than I like for that kind of amp!

Here is one a friend of mine did. Notice how hum free the pickups are at the first when he plays it acousticly.

He changed the pickguard to white as soon as he got it.

Yeah, Marcondo...I watched that one a few times as well. When did he change pups in that? I noticed, what I thought was, the same player in another video with the black p/g, but the video label named another set of pups.

Oh, Marcondo, would you know who has the guitar in stock for sure, not just a website claiming it's in stock?

That was with the stock pickups. The bridge on there is around 8.5k and he went with a lower ohm pickup he thought was more twangy.

I got mine at MF in the first week of July but I think they are ouf of stock at just about all the big chains on the web.

Email MF and see what they say.

Now i just need to go home and plug it in!
I had it delivered to my work so i could get it right away.

Aw, sorry, i ended up returning the Classic Vibe Tele.
It played great and everything, but i just couldn't justify the expenditure, since I had purchased an American Deluxe a few weeks ago.
The pick-ups sounded awesome - very quiet too.
I would tell anyone to buy it - one thing I am not too sure about though is whether I liked the lacquered fingerboard.
I guess I could get used to it, but my other guitars don't have that.
My strat and tele both have the non-lacquered maple, and my les paul is rosewood.

So I think my GAS has dissipated..... for now!

    BTW, i forgot to mention,
When I called Musician's Friend to get a Return Authorization, the phone rep offered me an approx $100 discount/refund/bribe, to keep the guitar!
And yes, I still returned it.......

Yes, Telecaster0325, but this thread is well over a year old. I got my CV Tele for $209 new, shipped to my door. Prices have gone up on that, too.

I must admit that I dig the sound he was getting on that video! The one's that were modded seemed to have a little special character that I quite liked... except that the one had the ground loop going on... other than that it was neato!
