Prince on Leno increadible Guitar Work

Not a big fan of prince but his Guitar skills were awesome last night on Leno as he was channeling a bit of Hendrix.
Anyone know what Strat this is?

    Thanks

I dunno. People praise him for being some sort of guitar hero.

When I listen to him I just hear a really long string of overly distorted notes.

Must be me. I feel the same way about a lot of 'guitar heroes.'

When I hear Hendrix, I hear somebody inventing the sound of the future of electric guitar on the spot.

I don't hear Trower that often.

Kinda boring and predictable playing IMO from Prince but I'd trade music careers in a heartbeat and I give him much respect.

Re: Prince on Leno increadible Guitar Work

Now, when I think of Prince, or the Sign or whatever he calls himself, he is an artist - I mean it in a positive way. True artists are generally a bit aff the wall - and that is what he is - he has found a new way of expressing himself on a continuous basis and it seems to appeal to a new generations and also to us who have known and grown to like - and dislike - him.

Comparing someone like Prince to other artists or discounting his obvious social influence for well over 20 years is like comparing Dali to Rembrandt or saying that musicians have no social impact...

He does what he does, he did what he did and hell, he made a buck doing it....

Personally, I thought the gig on Leno was good. Yeah, it has been done before. Maybe not as innovative as he used to be, but bringing this type of music out again in his style and for the folks to hear is pretty OK me thinks....

I dug him singing 1999 cause it was funky at the time. I dug You Sexy Mutha F*?%er because it had an awsome funk line. I dug Purple Rain because I saw it at the drive in and got laid afterwards in the back of my Pontiac Grand Safari Station Wagon (OK, it was my dads)

Oh, boy, I know I'm gonna get slammed for this one........

Prince is sorta like Sammy Davis Jr, if he fell off the stage into the orchestra pit what ever the s.o.b landed on he could PLAY it, and play it very well,a gifted talented dude and I like his music quite a bit, though in my view he can bounce off walls at times...thanks very much for posting the youtube vid

I saw that last night and I thought he was channeling Eric Gales.

Or at least "old" Eric Gales, I have an older EG album that sounds a lot like what Prince had going on.

I dug it. Wild Strat-o-thing too with no middle pickup and some sort of humbucker (almost looks like a mini-humbucker) in the bridge. Bridge & neck looked sorta EMG-ish. Then he just hands the guitar to the random audience dude at the end. Nice.

Musta switched the vid on me. I missed 'all that' LOL. Just looked/sounded like a lot of effects and booty shaking to me. Rather watch Jose tickle his strings on 'Light My Fire' for the hundredth time, or better yet Ricky Skaggs burn it up. To each his own. Wanna see someone really pour their soul out electrified? Google up some skinny young Carlos... :-)

Prince has written a few tunes for Jonny Lang lately. It sounds like they're rubbing off on each other (eeewww..you know what I mean.)

Prince ya a good musician, but I think he is out of touch with being too cool. I read a past guitar tech had problems with the Purple Prince. I have met Robin Trower, talk guitars, and he is one class act. Too bad the late night comics can't see a real great.... Do all yourselfs a favor, go see Robin. His US tour is just starting up, you will forget all about the eye liner Purple Prince. Sir Robin had a Strat in hand long before whats that guys name???

Re: Prince on Leno increadible Guitar Work

I dug the clip, and the class act of handing his guitar to someone in the audience. It sure beats smashing it into splinters (in my book anyway). I got a "pay it forward" kind of feeling.

What I really dug most about this song choice was that it wasn't really anything "new" or innovative. It seemed more like Prince paying homage to a great lost genre, one where musicians knew how to make music, tell a story with lyrics, add a bit of showmanship for the stage, and finish it off with a touch of class.

For me, the song was 70's funk/rock without the disco cheese. Quite refreshing.

I caught that last night on cable in the UK

Just at the very end I think you could see a 'tech' taking the guitar back moving right to left across the screen.

I really wasn't sure what to expect a couple or three years ago when I saw him. I never bought his music back in the day but heard his stuff on the radio a lot. Excellent musicianship, great player, very cool on stage and in his interaction with the audience. A first class show, start to finish. I'd go see him again.......Bill

Thing I like about Prince is his musicality. He can be funky, rocky, pop, write a ballad...

Guy's a good musician. Great performer. The whole deal.

Well, I looked that this particular video. Or parts of it anyway. He's actually playing to the song in this one. By doing that it's probably the best thing I've ever seen by him. Still doesn't do much for me.

Wow! Great video! What's not to like?

Kickin' backup up band cutting a groove deep as the Snake River Canyon.

Solid performance from a singer/guitar player who can sing the off-time stuff while keeping the guitar on-time and never faultered through the echo parts either. That's tough to do live.

The guitar solos were not blazing note-fests either. He took the time to let notes scream and then developed the sonic palette with judicious and expert use of effects that both thrilled and entertained the audience.

Combine all that with a pro stage, huge sound, awesome lighting, and you have a commercially excellent perfomance that accomplished exactly what it set out to do. Incite & Entertain!

Letting the guitar scream into feedback and then handing to someone in the audience was just pure, old school, rock n' roll genius.

Some people may not care for the music, but if they can't appreciate the level of professionalism and sheer talent embodied in that performance, they might want to consider getting a little more fiber in their diet.

I'm so intrigued by that cut, I may actually buy the album!

Re: Prince on Leno increadible Guitar Work

I liked the raw-ness of the whole arrangement. I don't think that he's creating anything new with the performance but instead is digging back into 60's / 70's rock and soul. I felt that he did touch on Hendrix more than any other strat players. Nothing complicated, but loud, good, and in your face guitar. The vocals were good to. of course IMHO.

BTW, I saw trower on the last tour. My wifey and I were standing next to the stage right in front of the bass player; Robin was to the left. The sound we heard was the stage mix. Definitely a different perspective. I'll never forget that show. It was awesome.

I like Prince, but all the effects and the superficial lyrics have turned me off. But this new stuff sounds interesting. He's a great guitarist with a questionable sense of taste.

All questions of taste are subjective. It's my opinion, and yeah, maybe it's questionable too.

The Jonas brothers have done all right for themselves too. But seriously, I know Prince has made a contribution to music, and I respect that. I just don't like some of his music.

Prince is a good player and writer, but that anorexic Little Richard look kind of creeps me out.

You're right, Prince was more relevant. I was just making a point about judging by record sales. I like his early albums, and I like what I heard on Leno. I like it when he relies less on synths, drum machines, and overboard effects. Again, just my personal tastes.

I liked it, and it's a style of music that he hardly does. For him, it's somewhat "new" territory.

Let's put it this way: I may get this CD now.

I really dig Prince and his writing, production, etc.. It's amazing and he's so unique. I saw him on Leno and it was guitar playing was same old, same old. Step on a wah and play in the box. That's what he always does. It's decent playing, but I think everyone here could do that. It's fun to do, but so generic.

Prince kinda lost me in the late 1980s with Paisley Park. I thought he'd really gone off the rails there. But when I see him on TV (like this Leno appearance or his Super Bowl half-time show), I get the feeling I should check back into what he's done since that album.

He's so strange though, it's almost like you'd have to look and make sure no one saw you listening to him. I mean he really presents himself as quite creepy - bisexual, whatever it is. At least he hasn't started with the facial surgery, yet... LOL
