Favorite dirt pedal currently?

I was interested in what other people on here are using to add some grind to their tone. I know this can be a very "flavor of the week" deal. So what's your current flavor?

Right now I can't make up my mind between my MHP modded SD1, or the RAT clone I built. The modded SD noses ahead do to its versatility, but hawt damn do I love my RAT! I have both on my board but don't stack them, I like having two flavors of OD. I also have a SHO to boost and with those I can get several different textures out of my 64 JET.

I have a DS1, a Custom Badass 72, an Angry Fuzz, a BYOC TriBoost...yet I keep coming back to my all time fave pairing of Boss SD1 and my trusty TS9. And my Whirlwind bomb for clean boost...

I'm still using the same old Fulltone '69 Pedal and BMF Fat Bastard. I recently bought a Vintage Rat reissue and it's cool- it sounds just like the clone that I built, but I don't use it with the band I'm in.

With the band, all of my dirt is the Fat Bastard and '69 Pedal into a 5E3 clone, usually with a Telecaster.

I use Digitech pedals, and I love them. For OD I use a Bad Monkey, and for out and out dirt, the Hot Rod, which has a settings for Rat and Marshall. They're not the most expensive pedals, but they sound good to my ears.

My favorite OD pedal of all time is the FullDrive II. But lately I've been playing with a Timmy just to see if the hype bears any relation to reality. Pleased to report that it does. The Timmy is an extremely good pedal.

I have a TS9DX and a modified DS1 that I use that someone gave me... OH WAIT! It was YOU that gave them to me!!!

I usually HATE Digitech stuff, but one pedal that I found that is totally awesome is a Digitech Hot Rod Rock Distortion. My son loaned it to me and it ended up being really good.

It emulates a DS1, at RAT and a Fuzz Face. It does a really great job. So much so that I asked son if I could have it. And strange enough, he gave it to me, as long as he could use it when he wanted to.

Yes those are the settings on my Hot Rod pedal. I like Digitech.

My favorite OD pedal of all time is the FullDrive II.

I set my Fulldrive II as a dirty boost with my Vibrolux Reverb. I set the pedal to CompCut and Mosfet and the amp's volume to 5. It make it sound like the amp's volume is on 8 without much of a volume jump. On a my Carvin amp or the Mesa Express that I had, the same settings cause an uncomfortable volume increase without adding dirt.

I like the sparkle drive and tube screamer with my vibrolux reverb.
Sometimes both together but mostly just the sparkle drive for dirt and the tube screamer for leads.

Keeley modded 808 tubescreamer and Keeley Katana. More frequently use the Katana (yes it is a clean boost and an OD).

My workhorse is still the Digitech RP-355 (loaded with many simulations of dirt pedals) for plain pedal I love the Keeley modded Blues driver with phat switch.



For silly fun my old Big Muff Pi is still the king.

I do too, well... maybe not a ton, but a bunch of fuzz pedals... I only really use the '69 Pedal, though. I entertain myself with the rest of them.

My only pedal at this time is a Mojotone mule. Very tweedy OD that turns into a faux fuzz kinda thing when you crank the drive. Very cool pedal that's definitely a keeper. At house friendly volumes it sounds as close to my 1x10 5F1 clone cranked as you could possibly hope for. When the amp's turned up a bit more it sounds exactly like my amp cranked. Probably gonna try another OD pedal or two at sone point just to add some tonal variety.

Is that a Tube Sound Fuzz/Red Llama clone?

I built a GGG Red Llama clone and really like it. Like you said, it's very tweedy and can get fuzzy.

That it is, Don. Not sure if it's an exact copy but it's at least heavily based on a Red Llama. I should've built one though. The mule wasn't cheap and the circuit looks mind numbingly simple. I use the heck out of it though do it was money well spent.

My go to dirt pedal generally is an original blue Fulldrive II (not Mosfet). Just dig the possibilities

When needing the Fuzz I use a Fulltone Soul Bender - also the original one that really sounds like the old Vox Tonebenders

When I need to make my Fender sound like a Marshall (at least as close as possible) I have a Barber Dirty Bomb - nothing in this price range gets a Fender to sound like a driven Plexi without breaking the windows...

Dude, that Barber stuff sounds AWESOME! One of these days I'm gonna get their low gain OD (I forget the actual name), but I always forget about them. It seems like they don't get as much love as other brands... But I'm always impressed with their pedals when I hear them.

Just a garden variety TS9 (a couple, actually, an original & a RI. I can't tell them apart) & a Bad Monkey. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I've been very happy with the Danelectro Cool Cat series 1 pedals. They no longer make these versions because they were apparently a little too close to the designs of some other big names pedals. But their price point was much more friendly to my current budget.

All have their good points and bad points... it really depends on what sound you are going for.

They have a bunch of flavors from low to high gain. The original Direct Drive is awesome and comes in low and medium gain which is the one you most likely heard of.

The Dirty Bomb is a high gain thing that IMHO does kind of medium to high gain. Want your BF Fender to do AC/DC and Bon Jovi? Here you go...

Analogman Peppermint Fuzz. A little dirt when the volume is rolled back, over the top wailing when you turn it up. It would be perfect if only it was not so sensitive to temperature, which makes using it outside a questionable thing.

I used my Red Llama clone with my 5E3 clone the other day at rehearsal. We've reduced our volume levels lately and I can't get the amp to break up the way I like it on it's own.

The pedal sounded wonderful with the guitar's bridge pickup- more or less like the amp cranked. I didn't like it as much in the combined and neck positions. It sounded kind of grainy. Maybe I can tweak some components.

Maybe I'll try my Rat next week.

On a lark, I put my name on the Analogman King of Tone list last December.

I got an e-mail earlier this week saying that my name has come up.

I'm not 100% convinced that I want a $240 overdrive pedal though it is 2 in 1 and they do seem to sound good.

I ended up trying my Lovepedal Eternity Burst at rehearsal this week. I bought this when they were selling them for $100 a coupl of summers ago. It's a great sounding pedal but has a little more gain than I like. I had the "Glass" control all the way down and the gain at about 8:00 and it sounded good.

Seriously though, my favourite 'dirt' pedal just now is a Box of Rock;



It works especially well with darker amps, it can be a bit spiky with something brighter like a tweed Bassman.
I've recently started a major fuzz pedal addiction too so don't get me started on those...
