A woman brought a Tele into a music store where I teach to inquire about the value. I only got quick look at it. Most of the info the store owner gleaned from it said it was a 1966. The only thing that was odd was an "R" in the neck pocket. No numbers. Just the letter. Any idea what that means? Could the body possibly be newer? It was a three piece btw.
It is not a high end collectible because the finish was removed, probably in the 70s, and the pickguard is new. It was also routed for a humbucker in the neck position, although this has been changed (possibly with a new pickup).
However, overall, it was really a nice player. The neck is pretty sweet, with beautiful even wear on the back and the rosewood board. The bridge pickup twangs like a crazy and it gave me goosebumps when I played a couple of Don Rich licks (it was the pickup, not my playing, lol). It weighs around 7 lbs (I could tell because it felt just like my own Tele which is that weight).
I am hoping to get pics later today from the owner.
