Look at what I played for Easter

Check this out! The other guitar player in the church band borrowed this and a Les Paul from one of his friends. He played the Les Paul and I played this. It was fantastic!





I knew something was up because the other guitar player called me earlier in the week to tell me he had a "surprise" from his friend. This friend has a studio and a big collection of Gibson and Fender guitars and amps. Actually, his friend is partial to Stratocasters and has over 20 of them. Anyway, I thought he'd show up with some guitar to play. Well, I walked in and saw this SG on my guitar stand while he was tuning up a very sweet white Les Paul Studio. I was pretty thrilled at the sight of the SG, but still didn't realize I was going to be able to play it. I thought he put it on my stand just to tease me a little. Anyway, I got all giddy over the SG and he commented that he was curious how I'd like it. That just grabbed my attention so I said, "You mean, I actually am allowed to play this!?" Well, to make a long story short, I was allowed to play it and I did!

It is a great guitar. It felt great and played nicely. I found opportunity to use each of the pickups and liked each of them. I think I actually prefer the Maestro to the Bigsby on my SG, as well.

Before handing it back over, I took my guitar cloth and made sure to wipe it down really carefully. That's not an act of generosity to be taken for granted!

Yes, Phantom, buddy, it was sweet! I really like SGs, as well as Stratocasters. This color combination of a cream body and white pickguard is my favorite color combination in both SGs and Strats. I say this even though I have a walnut SG and a sunburst Strat.

It was such a fine guitar. It was set up very nicely and sounded so sweet. The cleans were very nice, as was the heavy distortion.

That's a beaut! Congrats. I played in church on Easter as well - but just used my trusty PRS SE Custom 22, which works great for all situations - but it surely doesn't have the flair of that sweet hunk of wood, steel, and strings.

It's engraved on the filler plate between the fretboard and the neck pickup -- standard position for the SG-shaped Les Paul Custom.

You are correct, sir. The original SGs were intended to be the redesigned Les Paul. This guitar was a reissue. So, it had the Les Paul Custom truss rod cover and filler plate.

Yes, it was, Volume. I was actually somewhat humbled. I mean, I know manufacturing technology is such that even inexpensive guitars can be made to a quality that is superior to what even expensive guitars used to be. But, the shear awesomeness of this guitar, plus the fact that the owner had taken care to have a truly quality setup, made it an absolute dream to play. These SGs retail for nearly $4000.00. It really was a nice instrument.

You and I know each other, bud, from the other forum. So, we're on the same page here. As SGs go, this sweet piece of guitar magic was near the top of the heap.

You are correct, sir. The original SGs were intended to be the redesigned Les Paul. This guitar was a reissue. So, it had the Les Paul Custom truss rod cover and filler plate.

The original SG's were in fact Les Pauls, the design superceding the original Junior, Special, standard (though this version was never officially called that) and Custom models. The Junior and Special were marked with a gold-script "Les Paul" decal on the headstock proper while the 'standard' and Custom editions carried his name inscribed on the filler plate. In all four instances, the TRC was blank. IIRC, the Junior only came in cherry red but the others could be had in cherry red, Polaris White (as with the instrument you played), and Pelham Blue. When Mr. Paul and Gibson parted company in 1963, the guitars remained as before but with his name totally deleted from the guitars.
