Three Fave Bassists, Especially on ...

I know that many of us could post a list of hundreds, but let's keep this to three please.

I wouldn't say these are my ultimate favorites, but they are in the top 10.

1. Paul McCartney, almost anything on Sgt. Pepper
2. Nathan East on Eric Clapton's 24 Nights. He takes those wonderful licks of Carl Radle and Jack Bruce and updates them, brings something new to them.
3. Dee Murray. His work on Elton's best albums really adds to those songs. A stellar performance is on Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding

Tom Hamilton is often overlooked, but he's one of the greatest rock bassists ever. He's subtle at times and at others he lets it fly (Sweet Emotions).

I saw Jack with Jefferson Starship around 81. He performed a solo, about 3 minutes long. It was interesting the entire time. A buddy turned to me and asked, "Don't you wish you could play like that?" I did!

If you want my opinion, and it's worth what you paid for it, my introduction to Jaco's bass playing was as a member of Weather Report. Specifically, I"d go for the 8:30 live album. His mix with Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter and Peter Erskine is nothing short of legendary.

My intro to Jaco was the album “Heavy Weather”. I used to crank my stereo up and just about shake the house with the cut “Birdland”, my favorite on the album.

Birdland on the 8:30 album is also my favorite. A vocal version of this song was recorded by Manhattan Transfer in 1979 on their album Extensions. They did the song justice, too.

Yes, I heard the MT version on the radio a lot then. I can't wait to have some time to get into this stuff. I'm actually afraid to listen to Jaco because he's so over the top good. But then the joy of hearing a good player is worth the listen.
