Looks-wise: Using the car paint colors. Colors like Daphne Blue stand out to me--first Fender Bass I was ever aware of was a Daphne Precision.
Practical: Inline tuners. I like being able to see what I'm doing when tuning. Ease of use--all four go in the same direction tuning up and down.

IMO Acoustic, Ampeg, and Sunn were the only credible bass rigs and only because those companies built speaker enclosures optimized for bass guitars. There was nothing wrong with Leo's amp architecture.
