Kick-started the recording of my first songs

So, yesterday I spent the afternoon in a recording studio, producing the guides for my two first songs. Did both with my acoustic and my own voice. The Dean Markley pickup I had purchased a year or so ago came in handy.

Years ago we spent money on studio time for some demos. Turns out prospective venues were more impressed with the demos I made hanging a couple of mics over the dance floor at our regular gigs!

Watch, listen and learn. And Enjoy! Being a studio musician is an entirely different set of skills than being a live performer. In today's world once you get the basics down you can set up your own home studio relatively cheaply, as in less money than you'd spend on studio sessions for a CD's worth of music.

Pay extra attention to the mix down and mastering process. Once you understand it you can do it yourself. The unlimited takes you get at home and the ability to punch in and out makes up for a lot of equipment you see in the studio. Even before you hit a studio, just use Cakewalk and a cheap mic to rehearse at home and get your dynamics and timing nailed down.


That said, on mix and master always have another pair of ears there. As the writer and performer you'll hear the song differently than others will.

Quite a change from my first days in the studio in 1965 when we recorded on a big old Mapex single track deck and multiple “takes” were done to try to get that one version that had no errors and sounded great to the engineer.

The biggest PITA has always been mic'ing amps. In today's world of Fractals, PODHD's, etc., that has pretty much gone away, along with all the bleed over so keeping separation of instruments and vocals is pretty easy these days.

I recently started using amp plugins, and they are so believable, I just don’t need to mic my amps. For bass, I’ve got an Ampeg SVT plugin. Best recorded bass sound I’ve ever gotten.

I don't know any touring bassist who isn't direct to FOH these days.
