1973 Gibson SB 450 Bass Guitar

I bought this in a pawn shop in January, 1989 for $200. Alder body, Maple neck, Rosewood Fingerboard. SB humbucker pickups, Schaller M4 tuning keys. Gibson was kind enough to identify the year it was made after I provided them the serial number. It came in a natual finish, but I sanded it down and re-sprayed it with a clear finish. It came with a case, but for a larger guitar, so I cut some foam to secure it in the case. Originally it had flatwound strings, but I put some roundwounds on it. Usually it's plugged directly into my console for recording, although I may use some amp plug-ins after the fact.

The only downside of this bass is it's headstock heavy. Not a problem in the studio, when I'm usually sitting down, but kind of awkward when playing live and standing up.

I think I re-wired the switches when I refinished it, as they seemed to be "backwards" as far as the pickups were concerned. I don't know why my photo of it is black and white, I may have to take a better one now that I have a "semi-decent" camera.

All SG-based instruments (including the EB-0 and EB-3L basses) are neck-heavy. It's just something we have to live with.

It's a nice looking example and the bargain price makes that deal so much sweeter.

Ok I took a couple of color photos of it just now, so you can see the natural color. I don't know which bass this case was meant for, but my Gibson fits in it with a piece of foam under the body, and it's solidly built and was included in the price of the bass.
