    Did You Vote?

The question is for U. S. citizens, so ignore it if you aren't one.

Today is the quadrennial exercise Americans go through to elect the person who will hold the highest office in the land until the next time.

I remember when we did it in one day. I also remember when everyone spoke English, a Coke was ten cents, gasoline was twenty cents a gallon and a McDonald's hamburger was made from beef and cost fifteen cents. So, I'm old.

Enough of the wool-gathering. Elections have become a form of trench warfare. Campaigns last for months, as does the election process. The worst of it is that the candidates have learned and availed themselves of electronic communication. My phone, both text and audio, my TV and my email have suffered a non-stop barrage of ads and candidates I've never heard of asking for money. Today it (hopefully) stops.

On the radio, I kept hearing that if one voted early (unthinkable, prior to COVID) the bombardment of these irritants would go away. I voted early just for that purpose. It didn't work. I kept receiving these electronic offal up until 8:00pm last night. I've had it! A pox on everyone's house!

So, did you vote? Are you as sick of this as I am?

Preach it, brotha! My ballot went in a month ago. God willing, the best candidate will win and we'll be done with this kabuki dance, at least for a while.

    Re: Did You Vote?

Best part of election day is the end of the deluge of campaign crap. I just went into my spam folder and there was a PILE of ads from the "Other Side" - at least a dozen a day! I don't see it quieting down for a while, however... no matter who wins, it could get ugly. I was a bit saddened when both my daughters talked about getting good walkie talkies so when the apocalypse comes we'll be able to keep in touch (we all live within a 4 mile radius), even if the phones go down.

We used to all go on election day with the kids and then grandkids, this year my youngest had to vote in her county 100 mi away, but last Friday my wife and I and 2 grand daughters voted early. It was the youngest grand daughter's first time!

Voted in person a couple weeks ago. Easy decision. Made my voice known and not watching returns.

The basic fact is whatever the outcome, you have to deal with it (or move to another country). The fact is local politics have much more impact on our lives vs federal.

I'm celebrating the end of this cycle (finally!) with a couple of fingers of Crown Royal from a bottle dated 1969.

I just checked my email spam filter. It's about half the size it was. No Nigerian princes saying I've been awarded a gazillion dollars, but no hands out for contributions, either. I feel almost giddy.

I know I'm not allowed in this thread, not being a US citizen. But I had a few drinks too, as the US policies affect the whole world and certain countries in particular, mine included.

    What a relief!

    +1!

We pretty much abide the First Amendment to the Constitution here so long as the decorum of good taste and common sense are followed.

    Re: Did You Vote?

Of course I voted. There was a lot at stake. I haven't voted in person for many years, choosing instead to vote by absentee ballot. So much easier!

    Re: Did You Vote?

    I voted again today.

No, you read that right. After the last election, one of our state senators was elected to the U. S. Congress, so now there's a seat to fill. In typical SNAFU fashion, the two major parties today held what's known as "firehouse primaries." Also known as firehouse caucuses, this is a way for the parties to stand up a new slate of dummies, the winner of each gets to face off in January for a special election to fill the seat.

So, with only ten days from last election to firehouse primary, and no means to research the candidates' platforms (the local party web site is still showing pre-2024 election information) I attended the latest kabuki theater, mostly because it was an excuse to get out of the house.

I hope between now and January 7 we'll know who we're voting to send to the state capital. What a farce.
